2. Pancreatic juice

This is produced by the pancreas. It flows through the pancre-

atic duct and contains the following;

a. Pancreatic amylase (enzyme) digests starch and carbohy-

drates to maltose and glucose

b. Trypsin (enzyme) digests proteins to peptides and amino

acids

c. Lipase (enzyme) digests fats to fatty acids and glycerol

d. Pancreatic juice also contains sodium hydrogen carbonate to

neutralise the acidity of the chime from the stomach.

The ileum

This is the second part of the small intestine.

This is the second part of the small intestine. Food digestion is

completed here and the digested food is absorbed in the body.

The walls of the ileum produce an intestinal juice which con-

tains enzymes that complete food digestion.

The ileum secretes an intestinal juice called succus enteric us

which contains enzymes like;

1. Peptidase: breaks down peptides to amino acids.

2. Lipase: breaks down fats to fatty acids and glycerol.

3. Maltase: breaks down maltose to glucose.

4. Sucrase: breaks down sucrose to glucose.

5. Lactase: breaks down lactose to glucose.

6. The ileum also produces mucus, which lubricates the food

passage and prevents enzymes from digesting the walls of

the small intestine.
