Importance of poultry

The uses of poultry are summarized as follows:

 Poultry provides food (from meat and eggs) to

man

 Poultry generates cash when the

birds or their eggs are sold.

 Poultry has a social –cultural sta-

tus in Uganda. People keep poultry

for cultural purposes like dowry and

other rituals.

 Some birds are kept as pets; for ex-

ample, some chicken breeds, parrots, pea-

cocks.

 Poultry waste is used as fertilizers
 Feathers from birds are used for decoration, making
pillows, dancing props, cushions.

Why do some farmers prefer Poultry farming

 It requires a small piece of land

 Poultry birds grow faster than many plants and animals. So
farmers make money faster

 Poultry birds multiply faster

 They do not require much knowledge to apply.

 Poultry feeds and other materials can be easily acquired

Knowledge or Skills | Capital | Space to setup farm | Labour | Secu-

rity (free from predators and thieves) | Access to market of farm

products
