Adaptation of the ileum to absorption of digested food.
         1. The ileum is fairly long to increase surface area for absorp-
            tion.
         2. I has villi, which also help to increase the rate of food ab-
            sorption of digested food.
         3. I has thin walls to allow easy diffusion of food.
         4. I has a dense network of capillaries that carry away ab-
            sorbed food.
         5. I has secretory glands which secretes enzymes to complete
            food digestion.
The hepatic portal vein takes blood rich in digested food from
the small intestine to the liver for processing.
