Cross Breeding in Chicken
Cross breeding is where an exotic parent is mate with a local
chicken.
This is done to produce an offspring
with improved characteristics inher-
ited from both parents.
Local chicken are cross bred
in order to;
1. Increase their egg production
2. Encourage fast growth
3. To give more meat production
Hybrids
Hybrids are produced when different pure breeds mate.
In crossbreeding, both the exotic and the local chicken may
not be pure breeds.
Hybrids are produced for the same reason as cross breeding;
to produce a chicken with better characteristics, e.g. fast
growth, disease resistance, more egg production, etc.
.
Examples of Hybrids:
Kuroiler, Thumper 707, Thumper 404,
Black rock, Black star,
Rose birds, Speckledy,
Hy-line, Bo vans [Rhode island red and light Sussex]
