Controlling Soil Erosion

         Terracing.

This is the cutting of steps (terraces) across the slopes to the speed of

         running water.

         Contour Ploughing

Contour farming is growing crops across or perpendicular to a slope

rather than up and down the slope to slow the speed of running wa-

         ter.

         Strip Cropping

Strip cropping is a method of farming which involves cultivating a field

partitioned into long, narrow strips which are alternated in a crop ro-

tation system. Strips of grass are left in the spaces to reduce the speed

         of running water.

         Afforestation

Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees

(forestation) in an area where there was no previous tree cover.

         Re-afforestation

Reforestation is the process of regenerating or replanting forest areas

that have been destroyed or damaged for the benefits of mankind.

Bush fallowing. This is the practice of leaving the land to grow bushy

         for some time.
