Solutes, solvents and solutions
A solute:
It’s a substance that can easily dissolve in another substance
(liquid)
Examples of solutes include, salt, sugar, glucose which dissolve
in water
A solvent
It’s a substance (liquid) that dissolves a solute.
Examples of a solvent is water. Water is called a universal sol-
vent because it dissolves most solves.
Substances which do not dissolve in a solvent such as water, is
said to insoluble
Insoluble substances includes stones, ash and sand.
Solution
It is a substance formed after a solute has completely dis-
solved in a solvent.
Separating mixtures
When separating mixtures of solids and liquids we use the fol-
lowing methods
1. Filtration
2. Evaporation to dryness
3. Decantation
4. Distillation
