Selecting a good breed
The following are pig breed characteristics considered to be
good by most farmers
1. Resistance to diseases
2. Grows or gains weight fast
3. Quickly adopts to the environment
4. Easy re-breeding and sows produce multiple births
5. Have low mortality rate, especially with piglets
Problems affecting the piggery industry in Uganda
1. People do not want to keep pigs because they eat food eaten
by people.
2. Pigsty produce a bad smell therefore cannot be kept in resi-
dential areas.
3. There are diseases and parasites mainly helminthosis and
African swine fever
4. There is smaller market for pork compared to meat or chick-
en because of food taboos.
5. Pig feeds price fluctuation e.g. maize bran, makes the busi-
ness less profitable in some seasons
6. high costs of inputs
7. unstable availability of feed resources
8. lack of good quality breeding stock
9. lack of enough land
10.high costs of veterinary medicines and services
11.poor business skills such as inability to keep farm records
and poor marketing
